LIMOGES BOX - 'WOODEN' CONTAINER OF CAMEMBERT FROM NORMANDY - COW - WHEEL INSIDE
Couldn't load pickup availability
This small, Limoges box is a 'wooden' container with a scene of a cow, in a grassy meadow. The red border has "CAMEMBERT DE NORMANDIE and "LE LAITIER" (dairy or milkman). The cheese originated in the late 18th century in Camembert, Normandy. The wooden box, which enables the cheese to be transported farther distances, was created in 1890. The variety, officially designated "Camembert de Normandie", must be made in Normandy, from unpasteurized milk. In the U. S., the FDA regulations prohibit the importation of unpasteurized dairy products. A ribbon bow is the clasp, and a removable, wheel of cheese, with a cut out wedge, is inside. The box has a diameter of 1.2" with a height of .7". On the bottom is: "Peint Main - Limoges France" with the artist's initials.
